Lord John Grey Cast?

Written by: Caroline Trevor

*SPOILER ALERT*

According to IMDB and SpoilerTVOscar Kennedy may have been cast as Lord John Grey for Season 2 of Outlander.

This comes from SpoilerTV - "According to IMDB, 16 year old Oscar Kennedy has been cast as William Grey (Young Lord John Grey). Now, this is far from official but casting such a young actor would make sense seeing as we meet him as a 16 year old in Dragon Fly in Amber. "

Lord John Grey is an English soldier who comes into the story during the Jacobite Uprising of 1745. He is a recurring character through a number of books and a favorite of Diana Gabaldon as she has written several spin-off novels of Lord John Grey over the years.

Oscar Kennedy IMDb

Oscar Kennedy was born in 1999 in Nottingham, England. He is an actor, known for Toast in (2010), Hunted in (2012) and A Plea for Grimsby in (2015).  He also played Henry Tudor in The White Queen.

The fact that he was a part of The White Queen would suggest Outlander is trying to keep some of the casting within the STARZ family.  So it would make sense for Oscar to be a part of season 2.

He is due to appear in episode 9 of Season 2.

  1. It's kind of weird--on IMDB he's listed as playing "William Grey." But I'm sure they mean Lord John, right? I'm glad they are casting him young--he will really grow up and change over the next few years, and seems like a great actor based on his show reel.

    1. Oh. I just read that he called himself William when he first met Jamie--I didn't remember that. Mystery solved! :-)

    2. In the book, he introduced himself as William Grey. Herself decided to call him Lord John when his character returned as an adult as she had decided to call Jamie's son, William and wanted to avoid confusion.

  2. I hadn't seen this news yet, so thanks for the notice! I love this kid from his looks and his reel. Then again, I've loved ALL the casting choices. One of my best friends is from Nottingham and his family is still there. He'll love hearing this.

  3. In Dragonfly in Amber, the book, Lord John is identified as William Grey. Later he calls himself William John Grey. But don't you think they will recast the role when Lord John gets to Wentworth Prison? He's in his late 20s by then.

  4. I can't see him being in all of season 3 as he'll be 20 years older in the later part of the season

  5. Jamie will be 20 years older as well--hopefully they won't recast him ;-). I guess they will most likely recast Oscar, but don't forget Taylor Lautner's transformation over a couple of years in the Twilight movies--they grow up fast!

    1. Yeah, 20 years is a lot less shocking of a transformation when your starting point is an adult male, rather than an adolescent. They will most certainly have to recast for season 3.

  6. Of course they'll recast for season 3. Lord John William Grey will be a grown man, aged 26, when he is assigned to govern Ardsmuir Prison. He's one of my favorite characters. If you haven't read the Scottish Prisoner, I highly recommend - especially if you're jonesing for a Jamie Fraser fix during Drougtlander. Jamie plays a smaller role in Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade, another good book.

  8. My ultimate dream casting for adult Lord John Grey has always been Matthew Goode, he is just the one I have always pictured while reading the books.

  9. I'm with several other commentators that they'll recast Lord John Grey for S3 & future seasons. Sam & Cait are in their 30's now playing 23 & 28 year old, but a teenager playing someone in their mid to late 30's would be like a high school theater production. It will be interesting how make-up depth ages Cait and Sam for S3 and so on. Fingers crossed tightly for s3 and on ward.

***SPOILER*** Can't wait to see Ron D Moore's take on colonial America. Also Cait/Claire reaction to the British man of war & being impressed into service for her medical knowledge!
