You know you're an Outlander Obsessenach when...

Written by: Janet Reynolds

You all know who you are. You've watched Outlander so much you can quote entire scenes from memory. If you're a book fan, you've likely read the books so often that they fall open to your favorite passages. Maybe, just maybe, you own a piece or two of Outlander gear (plaid kilt anyone?). In other words, if given a choice between A (as in anything) and Outlander, you pick Outlander. Simply put, you are an Obsessenach, loud and proud.

As we slog our way through #Droughtlander, we decided to pass the time celebrating Obsessenachs worldwide. So here, without further ado, are some sure signs you're an Obsessenach. Some are my own and some were added by members of our Outlander Cast Clan Gathering Facebook page. Have a few of your own? Please add them below or feel free to create your own meme and post it on our Facebook page. After all, we're all in this #Droughtlander together.

You know you're an Obsessenach when....

(Sorry Peter. Really.)

This is a real thing. Trust me. A variation offered by a FB reader: You start typing dinna fash, ye ken and verra in your emails at work. I might have done this as well.

How many shawls and cowls and capelets can a woman have? The answer is A LOT.

They don't call it knee porn for nothin' my friends.

TV variation? If you hit TV history with your remote, Outlander comes up every single time in the number one slot. The same might happen if you hit the history drop-down on your browser....hypothetically speaking of course.

Our Facebook members offered a few other book Obsessenach symptoms traits:

  • You can only read five minutes of another highly recommended book before dropping it and running back to the Outlanderverse.
  • You go to sleep tired and say, "I can still read one more chapter;" you wake up before you go to work and say, "I can read one more chapter," and...you take your book to work and say, "I can squeeze in one chapter during lunch."
  • When you're listening to Echo in the Bone on audio, reading a Lord John story with book group, listening to Voyager with your daughter, and Dragonfly in Amber with your husband.

Our readers had some other goodies, too:

  • Your 18th Century fictional life in Scotland is more compelling than your real life in 2016.
  • All your pets — maybe even children? — are named Fergus, Angus, Rupert, etc.
  • You lose your Mitsubishi Outlander — named Claire of course, and covered in identifying Outlander window decals — in the Walmart parking lot and are convinced she went through the stones.
  • You have more photos of JAMMF on your phone than your husband. (Sorry, whosever partner that is.)
  • When Inverness is tagged on your weather app....you know, just in case.

We could go on — and encourage you to do so in the comments. In the meantime, we'll leave you with this: You know you're an Obsessenach when...

What are the signs that you're an Obsessenach? I'll take selected ones from the comments and make them into memes to post to our Outlander Clan Facebook page. In the meantime, which of these rang true here for you?
Time to fess up. You're among friends!

  1. You google "Outlander" on a daily basis to see if there is any new tidbit of information to read.

  5. You go to the Dentist, and the two ladies behind the desk say "Oh good you're here. I'm on book three and I have questions. You then spend 15 minutes explaining Outlander book and show."

  6. Love it! I have conversations about the books and shows all the time. I got my dental hygienist sold on the show and books by doing that :)

  11. You create your own Outlander fan website (myOutlanderSite.com). You start a local Outlander Fan Club in Albuquerque (ABQOutlanders.club). You just HAD to have "Je Suis Prest" tattooed on your right shoulder. You prefer wearing 18th century clothing day and night. You fly all the way to London from Albuquerque to attend The Highlanders convention (and meet SAM!). You go to your daughter's friends' house near Edinburgh and go NUTS because it's Burntisland which you know is mentioned 7 times in Voyager. You can't have a single conversation with anyone about anything without relating what they're talking about back to something in Outlander. Oh yeah, I'm definitely an Obsessenach!!!

  12. Things I'll admit to:
    1. I DO have Inverness tagged in my weather app!
    2. I do not have pets named after characters but I do have a list saved in my notepad of Outlander names standing by for the acquisition of new pets.
    3. "Dozy smout" has been my favorite cut down since "The Wedding" aired.
    4. My husband knows the magic word when I try using the age old headache excuse.... "sassenach." [im not too proud]
    5. And finally------- I'm a hard core OL recruiter. If a friend needs a favor I always require payback by negotiating a few episodes of Outlander. They must watch the pilot, in my presence, then the next two followed by a 4 minute YouTube video highlighting the wedding. After they complete their obligation they usually have no time or energy left to ask for more favors.

I love these additions---dozy smout is such a wonderful phrase....love it. And I love the payback idea.

      Thanks for adding these

  13. Your phone screen saver is a close-up of Jamie!

  14. late to the party here, but you know you're obsessenach when you're married to a man named Jamie which makes is super convenient. ;) Also ditto on inverness and other scottish locations saved on your weather app, looking for the *right* pattern for the scottish wool yarn you purchased for a christmas present, and that you've suddenly become more interested in your dad's scottish ancestry than is normal for anyone. ;)

  15. You know you're a Obsessenach when the lullaby you always sing to your grandsons is "The Skye Boat Song" (Outlander version), your ringtone is The Shinty Song, the alarm blares "The Skye Boat Song" every morning, and the only thing you allow to be played in your car are the Outlander audiobooks!

  16. You know you're an Obsessenach when the wallpaper and screensaver on every device you own is Outlander related and your phone plays Skye Boat Song when it rings.

  17. You know you're an Obsessenach when the only thing you listen to in your car on the way to and from work for an entire year are the Outlander soundtrack CDs! Not to mention rereading all the books, rewatching the show multiple times, etc.!

  18. Since June 2015, I've read all 8 bks 14 times w/2 LJG & Virgins. Also own the DVDs of both seasons & audio books all the books above. I can get enough of them.

  19. You add shortbread to the annual Christmas Cookie list. (The newest recipe has them dipped in chocolate and covered in toasted coconut.)

  20. You put in for the day off for the local Scottish Festival every year now. Because Albannach will be there ...you know, kilts, drums, flying hair and primal screams.

You try every type of Whisky known to man. You try not to choke on Sam's favorite when it tastes like an ashtray. You discover your favorite is a cheapie that comes in a 2 liter plastic bottle. You're too ashamed to tell anyone.

You've gathered every local person who watches OL and invited them over for a premiere party and have an open invitation for every Sat. Night. Someone always comes.

Everything you buy has dragonflys on it. Not just jewelry and clothes, your whole patio and garden is overrun with flags and garden art depicting the critters. You're considering trying to grow heather.
